In eight years as manager of the Chicago White Sox, Ozzie Guillen has had five winning seasons (including a World Series title in 2005) and three losing seasons. Win or lose, Guillen has always kept life interesting in the wonderful world of Chicago baseball.

Chicago Sun-Times sports columnist Rick Morrissey covered Guillen’s tenure in Chicago and his new book, Ozzie’s School of Management: Lessons from the Dugout, the Clubhouse, and the Doghouse, is available now.

In this episode of the Voices podcast, Morrissey discusses the book, covering Guillen and his managerial style.

Guillen is a sports columnists’ dream manager.

“I do miss him,” said Morrissey. “I knew that if I had nothing else to write about, if I went to the ballpark and said, “Geez, I don’t have a column today, what am I gonna write about?’ You just go and stand by Ozzie with the other media and people start asking questions and it goes in places you never thought it was gonna go.”

Guillen moved on from Chicago to Miami after the 2011 season, a move that has taken a toll Chicago baseball reporters. Let’s face it, Robin Ventura (new White Sox manager) and Guillen are two completely different personalities.

“Look, there’s a hole where Ozzie used to be,” said Morrissey. “There’s a hole for us in the media because all you had to do is turn on your tape recorder and he’d say something … and it was interesting. There’s an Ozzie size hole here.”
